" Be the change, you want to see in the world"

Mahatma Gandhi

Born Today
What emotions go through a migrant’s heart as they realize they are alone, far away from home? The amount of courage it takes to open their heart to a new life, find new love, and form new bonds is unfathomable, yet it's possible when strangers extend a compassionate hand amidst the affliction of having lost everything. They are Born Today, on the day they face their new life with new fears and dreams. This song is a cry for help that is full of hope and trust in the human spirit of love, compassion and empathy. It is a collaboration between musicians of very diverse cultural backgrounds as listed in the submission form. It features a powerful African voice, rich Celtic bagpipe cries, intricate Greek bouzouki, pensive piano, and a yearning Arabic cello all shining within a lush orchestral texture laced with percussive fusion flamenco heartbeats and a touch of electronics. We wanted to explore what a 'cry of hope' would sound like through aspects of music stemming from our own cultures as well as others. 'Born Today' is dedicated to Syrian musician Iyad Osman, who refused to carry a weapon in order to keep playing saz. A kind soul who loved mixing cultures in his music, he fled Syria only to die a year later as a result of a mistreated mild illness. He united the music community worldwide in happiness through his music, and bitter grief over his loss, despite their diverse political views. To Iyad, who is ‘Born Today', on the day he died, and the love he spread to the world.

The BEYOND FOUNDATION is pleased to present the third CREATIVITY AWARD to the collaboration „BORN TODAY“, created by four artists with these cultural backgrounds: Syria-Bosnia-Palestine, Ivory Coast, Greece and Switzerland.

„BORN TODAY“ relates to the refugee situation in all parts of the world. It tells about the courage the refugees need to open up to the new life situation and to find new love and new bonds. These people are born on the day they meet their new life with new dreams.

We find the rich sound of instrumentalization very touching, the tones from the different cultures, the beautiful interplay of bagpipes and bouzouki, coupled with the rousing African voice. The BEYOND FOUNDATION is happy for the team of „BORN TODAY“. They will receive 4,000 USD for their collaboration.

In this song, water is a metaphor for the emotional connection between people which can bridge cultures and cross borders. It is also a basic universal human need that we share. Water is a critical natural resource, and in many countries, the lack of it affects predominantly women, who often have to carry it over extremely long distances with great effort. But collecting water also brings women closer together in their shared mission. Featuring the beautiful and powerful voice of Sheryl Gambo.

The BEYOND FOUNDATION has decided to present the second CREATIVITY AWARD to the collaboration "WATER", which consists of artists from four countries: Congo, Kazakhstan, Switzerland and the USA.

The piece „WATER" transports a worldwide important theme. Water shortage is a bitter reality for one in six people. Without the number one food there would be no agriculture, no industry, no life. A person can survive four days without water. Water is beyond in all aspects and connects us all.

The BEYOND FOUNDATION likes how metaphorically the song is written, the strong music, the choice of instrumentation and the beautiful voices. Congratulations to the team! It will receive 4,000 USD.

A voice of a winner: "It's a huge joy that a collaboration of artists from different universes, separated by thousands of kilometers, could have ended in such a song in just a few days. It's all the magic of this project. Thank you so much.“ - Sheryl Gambo, Congo

A beautiful result of four inspiring minds from 3 different countries. ... have a seat :-)
