HOW TO GO BEYOND

Once a year, BEYOND MUSIC hosts the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT, a worldwide collaboration initiative for BEYOND MUSIC platform users. Artists are invited to connect, exchange ideas, collaborate and submit an original piece of music to the project.

To qualify, at least two musicians, composers, singers and/or songwriters from different cultural backgrounds must work together to develop and submit an original music piece reflecting the theme selected by the Artistic Director. In 2018 we are happy to announce the multiple Grammy winning music producer Larry Klein as our first Artistic Director.

After an online voting process and a final selection by the Artistic Director, ten musicians will be invited to a workshop with the Artistic Director Larry Klein, culminating in recording sessions at a top studio for the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT album, with flights, airport pickups, accommodations and catering included. Each artist will receive a payment of 2,000 USD for their contribution to the digital album, plus standard royalties from digital album sales. The digital album will be marketed and distributed by the BEYOND FOUNDATION.

PARTICIPATE AND INNOVATE

The full process includes the following steps:

1. Collaboration Stage
Get to know professional musicians, composers, singers and songwriters from all over the world within the BEYOND MUSIC community and connect with them! Share your experiences and talk about possible collaborations! Work together and develop an original piece based on the theme presented by the Artistic Director.

2. Submission Stage
During the submission phase, artists will upload their collaborative works to the platform. The submission phase runs from 7th November 2018 to 3rd March 2019. Compositions submitted after the deadline will not be eligible for consideration.

3. Voting Stage
From 4 March to 13 March 2019, the general public will be invited to select and vote for the most exciting compositions. Everyone has one vote per track every 24 hours, but participants cannot vote for their own pieces. At the end of the voting phase we will publish the top track list. The winning team in the online voting will receive the BEYOND PUBLIC AWARD, endowed with 4,000 USD.

4. Final Selection and Recording stage
The Artistic Director of BEYOND MUSIC, Larry Klein, will select 10 artists from all submissions, who will contribute to the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT album regardless of their placement in the online voting. With this BEYOND MUSIC strives for diversity and wants to give a number of interesting artists from the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT the opportunity to participate in the recordings. The winners will be informed by email and presented on BEYOND MUSIC. They will spend a workshop week with Larry Klein at the end of April/beginning of May 2019 and record the album together.

In addition to the ten musicians selected for the album recordings of the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT, the BEYOND FOUNDATION will regularly honour outstanding collaborative works submitted to the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT. Collaborations that demonstrate enthusiasm, creativity and musical versatility and embody the spirit and values of BEYOND MUSIC will receive the BEYOND CREATIVITY AWARD, which is endowed with 4,000 USD.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can take part in the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT?

The BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT is open to all artists registered to the BEYOND MUSIC platform.

What kind of music is the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT looking for?

We are looking for creative collaborations! All contributions should reflect the PROJECT’S theme which is chosen by our Artistic Director. At least two musicians from different cultural background must work together to develop and submit an original piece of music. The participants are completely free to choose the style of music and to decide whether they create a purely vocal, instrumental or mixed piece. It is most important that the music is characterized by cross-cultural musical interaction and collaboration. After being submitted to the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT, the original music pieces may not be exploited commercially on other platforms (e.g. iTunes) or sold on other recording media. Please find out more in the Conditions of Participation.

What is the musical theme of the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT?

The pieces should be loosely centered around the ideas of love, compassion and empathy being essential human qualities, and that we as human beings are alike, bound together by both the good and afflictive qualities of the human condition. This does not mean that the music, lyrics, or songs have to directly address “love” per se, as the struggle to bridge boundaries between us as people or cultures can involve sadness, struggle and frustration. The difficulties and issues that occur between two people trying to live together and transcend their differences can be as strong, or even stronger metaphorically than a song that addresses any global issue directly. This requirement just prescribes that the theme or direction must be borne of the need or will to move toward, as Abraham Lincoln put it, “the better angels of our nature.

I don’t have access to a studio. How can I produce and record a composition for the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT?

Music submitted to the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT is not required to be professionally recorded and produced in a studio. Feel free to leverage online digital audio workstations for your audio recording, producing, mixing and mastering. Many of these workstations are free to use.

How do I enter the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT?

After you have created an original composition in a cross-cultural collaboration, you must nominate one ensemble member as “administrator”, who uploads the piece as an entry for the PROJECT. The administrator will have to specify all contributing members of the ensemble, so the composition will appear in each member’s profile under “music”. Each contributor must furthermore approve the submission before it is officially registered. Your ensemble has to provide a short text explaining on the cross-cultural background of the piece of music you submitted. The ensemble can create various tags that allow other users to search for your piece of music at a later stage according to vocals, instruments, cultural background and genre. Your collaboration can upload a maximum of three music pieces to the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT. If you are a member of more than one ensemble, you can enter three compositions with each ensemble. We encourage you to join different collaborations and submit various pieces of music to the BEYOND MUSIC PROJECT. We cannot wait to listen to your musical versatility and creativity!
