Maia & the Big Sky

About me

Nairobi, Kenya

Afro-sonic soul musician Maia & the Big Sky is igniting Kenya’s contemporary musical landscape. Her magnetic vocals, both in Swahili and English, are woven together with jazz, folk and hypnotic polyrhythms creating a familiarity and warmth that transcends continents.

Maia has earned herself a formidable reputation as one of Kenya’s most explosive live performers, gracing the stages of prominent festivals such as Africa Utopia (UK), HIFA (Zimbabwe), Kigali Up (Rwanda), Sauti Za Busara (Zanzibar), Woodford Folk Festival, Perth International Arts Festival (Australia), Blankets & Wine, Cool Waters Jazz Festival (Kenya) and Mafrica Festival (New York).

The Maia & the Big Sky LP is the culmination of a three-year journey exploring her coastal heritage as a part of the filmmaking process of her first feature-documentary, which is currently in production. The first single LOLA includes a stop-motion music video of paper-hearts, and the second video PAWA
