Kombo Chokwe Burns is a musician born out of a musical family in a small coastal town in Malindi, Kenya. He grew up listening-to and learned from traditional Mijikenda musicians. He picked up his first guitar when he joined a church band in 1989 and later played with several bands at coastal bars and hotels. In early 2005, Kombo moved to Nairobi and joined a band called Kikwetu. Later that year, they toured Europe through Mondial Festival in Netherlands and came back the following year at North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. Back in Nairobi, he backed up known artists like Eric Wainaina, Susan Owiyo and Sauti Sol to name a few. In 2010, Kombo formed his Mijikenda fusion band, Afro Simba, but unfortunately had a terrible car accident where he lost several nerves on his right arm. He began learning a new way to play the guitar again. In 2013, he helped form a Taarab Dub band called Asili Dub. Kombo currently writes and performs with both Asili Dub and Afro Simba.
