Akili Maombi is a Congolese rapper and MC originally from Goma that arrived in Uganda in 2012 to pursue his music career. He eventually met other Congolese musicians and artists, after which he cofounded Kongoloko Kollective in 2013.
Kongoloko’s first success emerged as it was nourishing the launch of Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda in 2014. The collective gave birth to a powerful and new underground voice and culture, becoming a platform to introduce fellow creatives from Congo. As a result, Kongoloko gave shape to a newly-emerging hip-hop movement of Congolese beats in Kampala. In 2017, Kongoloko performed at Amani Festival in Goma, Congo in front of 42,000 people.
In collaboration with UK-based record label JustaHub, Kongoloko will be launching their first album ‘Kivu’ soon.
Apart from leading the Kongoloko crew, Akili is also active as a solo MC and has collaborated with both local and international producers. He has several new and exciting music projects coming out soon.
