About me

Johannesburg, South Africa

amaFranx is a low frequency fanatic. From the controversial, lowest end of the infrasonic spectrum to the highest note stretched in a chord on the six string bass, this musician is entirely and completely immersed. Playing his favourite bass guitar and singing along in baritone, amaFranx creates original compositions which grow far beyond the elements used to create them. In this instance one plus one really is three.

The name amaFranx represents plurality. The most obvious interpretation is that there is a single musician performing the complete and complex roles of multiple instruments in a perfect
synchronicity. At a deeper level the plurality speaks to the inclusivity and community that music
creates and promotes all around the world. In music, we are not just individuals, we are all together.

Hopeful

The song speaks to the hopeful hearts of those who yearn for a better tomorrow in all facets of life and partly inspired after the October 20th, 2020 incident in Nigeria where a peaceful protest turned violent and lives were lost. It begins with a chill and calm melodic piano and the soothing voice and inspiring lyrics which is accompanied by the aggression of a rapper as the song crescendos, all in the spirit of conquering one’s conflict.

Dreaming

There is a quote by Brenda Shoshanna that says: "All conflict we experience in the world is a conflict within our own selves". This song is about inner conflict. An ongoing battle between one’s thoughts and emotions. As much as inner conflict is inevitable, dealing with it effectively is essential if we are to live up to our capabilities.

The Bouncer

In this little instrumental song "the bouncer" by saxophonist Lorenz Hargassner we can see conflicts in between different musical styles of the world - and a solution. They are coming from different cultural backgrounds and manage to create a common language in their performance. Did you expect it worked? To throw in the Qyl Qobyz from Kazakhstan by Raushan Orazbayeva, the Pipa by Gao Hong, an electric bassist from Johannesburg, a classical trained vibraphone player from Berlin, a US gospel drummer and an australian remix-artist? Listen, enjoy!

Walls

We have too many walls, both physical and psychological, that are coming between us in this amazing, miraculous world. When we look more closely at them, we discover that they are built with fear: fear of the differences between us, fear of being separate, fear of not being accepted and connected to others. When we open up the conversation and talk about it, the fear melts like ice in the sun, and we can be together again.
