Marjo Smolander

About me

Helsinki, Finland

Finnish musician Marjo Smolander was born in 1986 in Rääkkylä, a tiny village in Northern Carelia near to Russian border. Marjo plays the Finnish traditional instrument called Kantele. Her way to play this instrument is certainly unique. Since 2006 she has been going for and back to Senegal, Finland and Mali. Senegalese and Malian music styles have rooted in her playing style making it more tough and rhythmic. Finno-Ugric musical style has had a remarkable impact on the development of Marjo’s musical language too.

On her debut album “Cosmologies” (2021) she collaborates with different artists from different countries. Music has been recorded in four different countries, Finland, Senegal, Denmark and Mali. The driving force behind the album is to explore different ways to communicate via music and to transmit emotions across cultures. Music is not just music. It talks, it comforts, it nurtures.

Smolander is known also from the duo Zäpämmät and Finnish-Senegalese Sunuy xale team.

Peace Evolution

Peace is not a static phenomenon and often backtrack rather than evolves. Even in silence there are many ways to promote it, and a smile is often what is needed to break down any barriers of sadness that may fuel conflict. Smiling is an extraordinary way to open all the doors that insist on closing. This collaboration is a call to break cycles of sadness and isolation that undermine the evolution of our personal and collective Peace, and also encourages that no culture is isolated in shyness by the predominance of others that tend to globalize.
