I'm a Finnish singer and composer of Karelian folk music. I'm specialized on ethnic sounds and lamentation. Voice is my main instrument, but I play Finnish national instrument Kantele and different traditional wooden flutes. I'm part of many different bands and projects all over the world (aElla, Lucas Mantel& Eliana Burki from Switzerland, Shanachie from Japan). At this moment my main profession is teaching singing at the Sibelius Academy Global Music Department and playing in the band Värttinä.

This piece is based on two lullabies - 'Ninna Nanna' which Andrea learnt from his grandmother in Italy and 'Nuku Nuku Nurmilintu' which Karoliina brings from the Karelian/Finnish tradition. We have chosen to place these songs in the context of a small boat in a perilous sea carrying people desperately seeking a better life for their children.
This piece combines analogue synthesizers, contemporary frame drumming from Italy and Ireland with womens voices from the Druphad tradition of North India and Karelian joiking from Finland. The piece explores the conflict between the drive of unrelenting progress and novelty with the broader rhythms of human experience and the natural world. The electronics create a pulse for tamburello, bodhrán, udu, daf and voices to move against pulling and stretching time towards a resolution that never quite comes .
