Steven Brezet

About me

Rotterdam, Netherlands

At a very young age, Steven took djembe lessons with the Senegalese percussionist Aly Ndiaye Rose. Soon he began expanding to other percussive instruments, including sabar, congas, bongos, timbales, timbal and others. He worked on his skills as a musician not only by taking many different classes, but also by traveling to countries with different musical styles, including Senegal, Guinea, Curacao, Morocco, Turkey, Cuba, Colombia and Brazil. This broadened Steven’s musical passion from African
percussion to include Brazilian and Latin music. Currently, Steven is recording and touring with the band KOFFIE, but for the past two years he has also performed and recorded with bands such as Banda Magda (USA), Ghost Note (USA), Bokante (USA), The Re:Freshed Orchestra (NL), Gallowstreet (NL), MY BABY (NL) The Bill Laurance Group (UK) and Grammy Award winning band Snarky Puppy (USA).

Hi! I was asked by Tarik Aslan to for a group with him, Steven Brezet and Hozan Peyal for this project. My studio is in Amsterdam and I had them over for a while. The first days I spend with Hozan to get to know each others way of playing. After that, Tarik arrived. This song started with a rif from Hozan and then this melody popped up in my head and with these chords it got again a sort of brazilian vibe to Hozan's Arabic riff.

The first days I spend with Hozan to get to know each others way of playing. After that, Tarik arrived. Looking at the group, my idea to create a Turkish Samba was formed. My goal was to find a way to put their traditional instruments in a new context. Along the way I also invited the other musicians. So special to create music together with people from such a different background.
