Sam Urscheler

About me

Lausanne, Switzerland

Hi! I'm Sam, a saxophone player and composer from Switzerland. I play mostly alto, soprano and tenor, and I also double on flute and alto flute and some clarinet. I've had the chance to grow in both jazz and classical environments, a heritage I use mostly in my compositions, while I've centered my playing more around jazz.

As a player, I'm very fortunate to play and grow with a few different ensembles: my own quintet CROME (string quartet and sax), two jazz quintets (by pianist Manon Mullener, and another by accordeonist Lea Gasser), as well as two big bands (one as 1st tenor sax and the other as a director), and a classical saxophone quartet. One of my strengths is my flexibility as I can adapt to different styles and aesthetics.

As a composer, I always try to breach the gap between written and improvised music, between the jazz language and some influence from classical music and beyond.

I'm very eager to learn more about other cultures and their vast musical heritage!
