At school we learn: “the oboe is a wind instrument with a double reed, characterized by its warm but penetrating sound”. Well, wait until you hear the conjuring improvisations of Maripepa Contreras! She is definitely “something else” in the best possible way: Spanish roots, classically trained, with a jazz education and with a passion for Brazilian music.
A few years ago, as I was falling asleep, the face of young child appeared before me. It was a little girl wandering alone across a desert under the night sky, escaping a war. In the vision it seemed she was real, and that she was calling for help. Some days later a melody came and I began writing the song about her. For the piece to embody the depth of emotions around Syria, I wanted to find a Syrian musician.. The song came to life with his soulful tones, the Beehive Orchestra and the harrowing tones of a Spanish Oboe player
