As an instrumentalist I take joy in being the second voice. Regardless of playing live or on a record, I try to discover that space just behind or next to the main melody and build something like a system of sonic support for the song. It’s almost like working on the background of the painting in careful detail so the subject stands out effortlessly and clear. As a producer I try to cultivate a similar sensitivity for the sonic layers of a song and how they interact with each other, to me there is immense joy in the smallest details and textures of all music and sound! This kind of sonic interplay also depends heavily on the spatial environment, which is why, as a producer, I’m always looking for new and ‘sonically’ challenging rooms and environments to record in.
