About me

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa

I am a full-time freelance/session musician from Johannesburg, South Africa, and have been playing the violin since 1983. My foundation/background lies in Western Classical Music (Orchestral, Solo, Chamber, New Music), and extends through to numerous "Western Contemporary" styles (Jazz, Punk, Rock, Metal, Electronica etc.). Due to my country's beautiful cultural diversity, I have also been privileged to explore and learn from its vast array of indigenous music and traditions, with a keen interest in traditional Xhosa uhadi and umrhubhe music.
I have collaborated on several multimedia projects with renowned artist William Kentridge and composer Philip Miller since 2002, and recently recorded an album of works by internationally acclaimed composer Kevin Volans, titled "violin:piano." Additional instruments include Viola, Stroh (Resonator) Violin, and 5-string Electric Violin with added effects.

Sacred Song

This is a song about how we as humanity are in the process of learning to sing along to mother natures sacred song. It is an anthem to uplift our spirits and remind us to use our voice to rejoice and join her sacred song which in practical terms also means to choose to live and act in harmony with each other and our beautiful mother nature. It has been an amazing experience to collaborate as musicians from all over the world to make this song come alive.

four incarnations of love. 4.leaving

“Leaving” is the last piece of the cycle. This is an audio depiction of the last face of Love when it’s leaving for good. Played by Waldo Luck Alexander (violin) it’s perfectly describing that moment of farewell , and reminds me personally a phrase from old Russian song that “farewell is a little death”. Hope you can "tune in" , even it's not the most pleasant experience. :)

FOUR INCARNATIONS OF LOVE. 3.DISTRUST

The third piece is about “dark” face of love - jealousy and possessiveness. The partnership for creating it came from South Africa - brilliant violin player Waldo Luc Alexander accepted my proposition to team up for both last pieces of the cycle, and his “string-touch” helped to express the cold, annoying and destructive nature of this side of love here.

“Raqsa” - is all about dance and love to move with music. Its a complex and energetic piece that united under one “roof” classic, rock, folk and jazz musicians form Uzbekistan, Russian Federation, South Africa and Switzerland. Have a nice ride :-)
