Theresa Ng'ambi

About me

Lusaka, Zambia

I am an Afro-traditional musician from Lusaka, born 1983 in Tendere, Zambia nearby the border to Malawi. I am a singer, songwriter, folk acoustic guitarist, percussion player and storyteller. My artist name and signature is Kanjiba. The word Kanjiba comes from my native language Nsenga and means wild dove. My music is a reservoir of language and oral education.

Raised by a widowed mother and inspired by nature with influences from my grandmother's old folk songs I developed an interest in singing and dancing as a child. My grandfather, a retired miner, was a kalimba player. I lost my parents, my brother and my grandparents at an early age. Because of these tragic events, I decided to write a diary and express my experiences through music. I am a reservoir full of stories that demand acoustic implementation, always looking for new influences to create a new sound.

With additional lyrics in Urdu, by Zara Madani, based on a conservation-themed traditional saying from Pakistan.
